Awesome @rabernat . I was signed up for hosting but happy to have you do it. Whatever your preference.
Hi @rabernat and @rsignell, we, the European Pangeo Community, are keen to host showcases this fall to highlight the use and impact of the Pangeo stack across European research institutions and industry.
We would like to follow the guidance provide in this thread. However, it would be great if we can set a catch-up between the American showcase team and some of us @pl.marasco @tinaok and my self to ensure we can maximize existing resources to promote and organize high-quality showcases.
Hi @acocac - we would be happy to see the showcase model replicated in the European community! This (very long!) thread outlines all of the systems and tools we use to make the showcase work. Most importantly, we are lucky to have professional support from @lsmith to help make the showcase run smoothly; she devotes several hours per week to this. Before committing to running another showcase, I would ask yourselves if youâre sure you have the time and / or resources to do the workâif not, you will likely burn out. (That almost happened to us before the Consortium for Ocean Leadership stepped in to save us!)
If you can commit to the work, then there are some other things to consider:
- How would we coordinate invitation requests between the two showcases? We want to avoid duplicate talks and also duplicate invitations to the same people.
- Would we share a common pool of possible speakers? If so, how do we determine whether a speakers speaks in the European vs. US showcase?
@rabernat thanks for the reply and sharing previous experience!
You certainly made an excellent point about the commitment. We hope to confirm it in the next coffee meetings. Also, weâll go through the things to consider.
Note the showcase idea is still at a very early stage. Alternatively, if there isnât such commitment yet (at least for this fall), it would make sense some of us in Europe submit talks for the US showcase.
@rabernat @rsignell @clyne - Hello!!! I hope you all had wonderful summers! September is rapidly approaching!! When would you like to plan for the first Fall Showcase? 9/1? 9/8?
As a reminder of where our documents live, here is the master checklist with cross links, here is our current signup sheet which includes some folks who couldnât make it during the spring or we pushed until the fall, and here are the survey responses - grey are the people we have reached out to, red have declined, and white we havenât communicated with.
So next step is we need one/some of you to send out invitations to folks who havenât presented yet and see if we can line up slots for this fall. Depending on how/why folks declined in the spring it might be good to reach out to them again since their availability may have changed. But that can be decided on a case by case basis (certainly donât want to pester people).
Iâm here and ready to help! Just give me a holler.
Thanks for keeping tabs on this important issue Leslie! Yes, i agree that we need to plan to get the showcase started back up again. I just tweeted to see if we can get any new volunteers.
Perhaps we should have a quick meeting to all get on the same page? I am pretty available for the rest of the week. Rich, John, would you be able to join a call?
Perhaps we could use tomorrowâs weekly checkin meeting (12pm ET) to discuss the showcase plans?
Iâll be at the Pangeo meeting tomorrow, and could stay on the line immediately afterward for a short call, or I have availability later that day after 3:30pm MT
John & Leslie I have just joined Video Meetings, Video Conferencing, and Screen Sharing - Whereby (formerly appear.in)
Finally popping head up post-vacation and AmeriGEO meeting. Ready to help.
Great! I am basically available all day. Switching to email to coordinate a meeting.
Note I have updated the Zoom link in (hopefully) all relevant locations: https://columbiauniversity.zoom.us/j/94877958106?pwd=UkE0UHF1U0x3VTVUNEJTam9mTXVHZz09
@rabernat @rsignell @clyne have an open pull request to get Daniels talk posted on the site and update the table with upcoming talks if someone could please push that through. Thanks!
Thanks Leslie! I just merged them.
Since you were added to the pangeo-admin group several months ago, you have the ability to merge these PRs yourself.
I finally found the Pangeo Showcase (Responses) - Google Sheets and it looks like we have about 5 talks signed up. I think this is enough to get started!
Iâm going to recycle Leslie Smithâs message from one year ago:

@JimColl should we walk through the process?
@rabernat, we are trying to get @JimColl set up to do the logistics for the Showcase talks. Can you please add him to the Pangeo TweetDeck and the Pangeo org on Zenodo?
His email is jamesmcoll@gmail.com
We donât do tweetdeck, and Zenodo doesnât have support for multiple curators for a collection. communities: support for multiple curators per community ¡ Issue #810 ¡ zenodo/zenodo ¡ GitHub
Iâm happy to set up tweetdeck if you can explain it to me?
@rabernat I have the Pangeo Twitter credentials now â we are all set on that.
Where do we stand on starting the Zoom recording? Still required to be someone from Columbia?
How can we make it so Jim Coll can record?
@clyne , can you please add jamesmcoll@gmail.com and rsignell@gmail.com as owners on the speaker checklist Google Doc?
Both handles were already showing up as âeditorsâ. I donât see an option for âownerâ
John, yep, my bad. I can edit the doc, so Jim should be fine as well. So we are good. Thanks!
