Pangeo BoF at SciPy 2025?

For those planning to attend SciPy this year, is there any interest in organizing a Birds of a Feather (BoF*) session for the Pangeo community?

Submission deadline is June 12 and we would need the following information:

  • Title of the proposed BoF
  • Abstract
  • Goal of the BoF (Examples: To take the temperature of some community, to inform strategic directions for a project, etc)
  • Will this BoF be primarily an open discussion or a panel discussion?
  • For open discussion, please list the names and e-mails of the proposed moderators. For a panel, please list the names and e-mails of the proposed panelists. Please also indicate how you will include attendees in the conversation.

BoF page on SciPy website

*A BoF is a community-organized session meant for community building - they can take on essentially any structure (e.g. community discussion, panel presentations, etc.) and any topic we choose.

Hey! I put this in the discord, but got no hits. Perhaps this is the right place to start instead.

Hello, all! I’m Julie Barnum, the lead for the Python in Heliophysics Community (PyHC; pyhc.org). I’m not sure who to reach out to to ask about this, but I’m interested in proposing a Birds of a Feather session at SciPy 2025. Specifically, I’d like to organize a panel presentation and following discussion period about open-source science-specific research software engineer (RSE) communities, and benefits of being involved in one/lessons learned in leading them. I have myself and another community, PlanetaryPy, on board. Reaching out to Pangeo as it would be great to have some crossover with a panelist from the geo community as well. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Hi @jbarnum - thanks for reaching out! That sounds like a great BoF idea!

I’m not sure exactly who on the Pangeo side would be a good fit for this panel, but tagging @jbusecke @dcherian and @TomNicholas as they’ve all held roles akin to RSEs and may be able to suggest a panel participant.

Thanks for tagging some folks!

Hey @jbarnum - @paigem let me know about this yesterday. I work with her as an RSE at ACCESS-NRI & I’d be happy to get involved if you need participants!

Hey @charles-turner-1 , if you’d like to participate from the Pangeo side of things as a panelist, that would be wonderful! I could send an email with the information I’ve written up for the abstract submission?

That would be great! My email is charles.turner@anu.edu.au
