Project Pythia aims to enhance participant recognition and ongoing contributions by publishing hackathon proceedings that highlight Cookbooks created or improved during our annual hackathons.
The short version & deadlines
This year, we plan to engage summer 2024 participants to finalize unfinished Cookbooks, making them publicly accessible in the Pythia gallery and promoting them at the AGU (December 2024) and AMS (January 2025) conferences. Cookbooks will receive credit on ProjectPythia.org along with unique DOIs for citation. Future hackathons will incorporate this publication process from the start, aiming to create annual proceedings that celebrate participants’ contributions. We ask Summer 2024 hackathon participants to communicate with us their intent to work with us to complete their unfinished cookbooks per the schedule below. The Project Pythia team is available to help get your cookbook published! Continue reading for deadlines and details, and reply in this post with questions or feedback about future publication opportunities, and thank you for your time.
Even if you have not participated in one of our hackathons, please use this thread to help us shape this process for future hackathons! If you have suggestions for publication venues or engagement methods, please chime in.
For authors, here are the deadlines to have your work highlighted at these conferences and in our future publication:
- 22 November 2024
Developers and maintainers are identified for each Hackathon 2024 Cookbook. Authors, please respond directly in your Cookbook publication checklist issues if able. - OPTIONAL EARLY - 2 December 2024
Cookbooks already near publication are submitted for Gallery publication for inclusion at AGU24 poster presentation. - 3 January 2025
Cookbooks are submitted for Gallery publication for inclusion at AMS25 presentations. - TBD Spring 2025
Deadline for inclusion in published Hackathon proceedings. We will provide authors with ample turnaround time.
We have opened checklist issues on Cookbook repositories where we will primarily communicate, and we will reach out via email. Please use this thread as well if helpful.
The long version & future plans
Project Pythia is exploring avenues for publishing proceedings of its hackathons to elevate credit and authorship for participants and encourage continued participation in the maintenance and development of Cookbooks after the synchronous portion of its yearly Hackathon has passed. Pythia plans to build this into the timeline of future hackathons, but for now we hope to catch-up and provide something tangible for contributors of past events. Here’s how we will get there:
-
Revive or continue design and maintenance of unfinished Cookbooks (in progress)
Here we will need confirmation from our participants in the summer 2024 Hackathon to identify maintainers and work on completing the checklist issues we’ve opened in each repository. Members of the Pythia maintenance team will work directly with contributors to support publishing of Cookbooks on our gallery. -
Collect Cookbooks into a tag and link accessible via ProjectPythia.org, accompanied by a blog or Discourse post with our reflections on the event and highlighting the contributors and their Cookbooks. (January 2025)
We plan to share this post and this collection as part of our presentations and presence at the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Annual Meeting, Jan 13 – 17, 2025. To enable this, we hope to have as many Hackathon 2024 Cookbooks published to the Project Pythia Cookbook Gallery by this event. See the bottom of the post for deadlines to have your Cookbook included in this conference collection. There is an optional early deadline for having your Cookbook shown off as part of our poster presentations at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Annual Meeting, Dec 9 – 13, 2024. -
Author and publish a detailed quantitative and qualitative reflection on the Hackathon 2024 with highlights of every new or enhanced Cookbook with credit to our participants with reference to the above collection. (Spring 2025)
We are still exploring avenues for this publication, and are open to suggestions.
All authors and contributions will be credited at ProjectPythia.org once their Cookbook is published, even if not by these dates. Additionally, every Cookbook is citable through a unique DOI that gets issued as part of the gallery publication process.
Project Pythia will provide future Hackathon participants with proceedings details and timelines during their synchronous participation in the Hackathon. We look forward to collecting each event’s Cookbook contributions into a yearly proceedings for publication!
