Dear all,
We are looking for a candidate to join our activities in the emerging field of storm-resolving climate models with kilometer-scale resolutions and explicit deep convection in the atmosphere. These models represent a step change in the field of climate modeling and are currently being developed by international projects such as DYAMOND and NextGEMS (https://nextgems-h2020.eu/). The position will be based in the research team “Climate Dynamics and Modeling” led by Prof. Aiko Voigt.
One of our key goals is to use these storm-resolving models to make fundamental progress in understanding cloud-circulation coupling, and to thereby improve predictions of global and regional climate change. Another key goal is to learn how to work with the output of these models, as the massive amount of data that they produce challenges established work flows and calls for new analysis paradigms. This is often referred to as the “data avalanche”.
The position comes with substantial freedom. Depending on the interest and background of the candidate, it can focus on scientific aspects, technical aspects or both. At the end of June 2022, we will host the 2nd NextGEMS hackathon in Vienna. The candidate will be given the chance to participate in the hackathon, and will thereby be quickly introduced to relevant tools and the international community around storm-resolving models. The candidate will further have access to state-of-the HPC systems such as the Vienna Scientific Cluster and the German Climate Computing Centre.
The Department of Meteorology and Geophysics over the last years has filled three new professorships. Together with the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy, the University of Vienna and Vienna‘s wider research environment, this creates a vibrant atmosphere and ample possibilities for collaborations and career development.
We are interested in candidates with a wide range of backgrounds. This includes meteorology, climate and physics, as well as data and computer science. The position is available until 30.06.2023. We are aiming to fill it as soon as possible.
